Integrated scaffolding and construction hoists for a new university building

The construction of the University of Glasgow’s new Health and Wellbeing Centre required a vertical access solution integrated with the scaffolding system. Brand Access Solutions combined Alimak TPL1000 construction hoists with on-site scaffolding to provide access across four building levels, marking the first joint project of its scaffolding and hoist divisions in Scotland.

Scope

The University of Glasgow's campus development programme aims to create new facilities for learning and research in the city's West End. Multiplex was appointed as main contractor and Programme Delivery Partner for the development.

For the new Health and Wellbeing Centre, Brand Access Solutions, formerly Lyndon SGB, was commissioned to provide a combined scaffolding and mechanical access solution.

The project involved Alimak TPL1000 construction hoists with a height of 20 metres and a load capacity of 1,000 kg. The hoists were tied directly to the scaffolding structure to provide access through the building's window openings at four levels.

Challenge

The project required vertical access to four levels of the new building, with the hoist installation integrated into the existing scaffolding arrangement.

Rather than providing separate access systems, the solution needed to combine mechanical lifting equipment and scaffolding within a coordinated arrangement. The hoists had to be positioned and connected to the scaffolding to allow access through the window openings at the required levels.

The project also represented the first joint assignment in Scotland for Brand Access Solutions' established scaffolding team and its specialist hoist division.

Performance

Brand Access Solutions combined Alimak TPL1000 construction hoists with its scaffolding system to provide an integrated access solution for the University of Glasgow project.

The 20-metre hoists, each with a load capacity of 1,000 kg, were tied to the scaffolding and configured to serve four building levels through the window openings.

The project marked an important milestone for Brand Access Solutions, bringing together its scaffolding and mechanical access capabilities on a Scottish construction site for the first time.

The coordinated approach demonstrated how construction hoists and scaffolding can be integrated into a single access arrangement to meet project-specific requirements.
