Engineered scaffolding and access solutions for Google's 300-metre headquarters development

The construction of Google's new headquarters in King's Cross, London, required extensive scaffolding and access solutions for a 300-metre-long, 12-storey building. Located alongside the railway lines leading out of King's Cross station, the large-scale development presented demanding access requirements, including scaffolding above a major suspended steel frame structure. Brand Access Solutions provided engineered tube-and-fitting and HAKI scaffolding as part of a £5 million access contract.

Scope

Google's new headquarters in King's Cross is a major commercial development in central London, designed to accommodate approximately 4,000 employees. Extending 300 metres in length, the building is one of the largest developments of its kind in the UK.

Brand Access Solutions, formerly Lyndon SGB, was appointed to provide scaffolding and access solutions for main contractor Lendlease.

The £5 million contract included multiple engineered tube-and-fitting and HAKI scaffold structures across the 12-storey construction site. A team of 20 scaffolding operatives was deployed, with the access works originally scheduled to extend over a five-year period.

Challenge

The exceptional scale and geometry of the building presented significant requirements for the planning and installation of temporary access structures. With a length of 300 metres and twelve storeys, the development required multiple scaffolding configurations to accommodate different construction areas.

The site's location alongside the railway lines leading out of King's Cross station added to the complexity of the construction environment.

A particular technical challenge involved providing scaffolding above one of the UK's largest suspended steel frame structures under construction at the time. This required engineered access arrangements suited to the structural configuration of the building.

The long-term nature of the construction programme also required scaffolding resources and access arrangements to support different phases of the development.

Performance

Brand Access Solutions provided engineered tube-and-fitting and HAKI scaffolding systems to meet the access requirements of the large-scale headquarters development.

The combination of different scaffold configurations enabled the access package to address the varied structural conditions across the 12-storey site, including areas above the suspended steel frame construction.

With 20 scaffolding operatives deployed and a five-year contract period originally envisaged, the project represented a substantial long-term scaffolding assignment for Brand Access Solutions.

The project demonstrated the company's involvement in delivering engineered scaffolding solutions for a major commercial construction development with complex structural and access requirements.
