The Factory, Manchester | QuikDeck® Suspended Access

QuikDeck® Suspended Access Solution for temporary works at Manchester’s landmark cultural venue

The construction of The Factory, a major new arts and cultural venue in Manchester, required a suspended access solution that could provide a large, stable working platform beneath the theatre roof. Brand Access Solutions combined conventional tube-and-fitting scaffolding with QuikDeck® Suspended Access to create 300 m² of suspended working space within just three days.

Scope

The Factory was developed in Manchester city centre as a major new cultural venue and permanent home for Manchester International Festival. The large-scale building incorporates complex steel structures and long-span elements designed to accommodate a wide range of performances and events.

Working for Laing O’Rourke, Brand Access Solutions, then operating as Lyndon SGB, provided a hybrid access solution combining traditional scaffolding with QuikDeck® Suspended Access. The project marked the first use of the QuikDeck® system in the North West region of the UK.

Challenge

Temporary works needed to be carried out beneath the theatre roof, creating the requirement for a safe working platform suspended from the structure above.

Before the suspended platform could be installed, Brand Access Solutions designed and erected a complex tube-and-fitting birdcage scaffold at the top of the theatre. This provided the access required to construct an initial 5 m × 5 m QuikDeck® bay. From this starting point, the platform could then be extended using the system’s cantilever swing-out feature.

The completed QuikDeck® platform was suspended by chains from the steelwork of the theatre roof. Edge protection and platform infills were subsequently added to complete the suspended working area.

Performance

Using QuikDeck® Suspended Access, a Brand Access Solutions crew of five to six people constructed approximately 300 m² of suspended platform in just three days.

The combination of conventional scaffolding and modular suspended access allowed the team to establish the initial access point and then progressively extend the working platform beneath the theatre roof. The completed system provided the temporary suspended working area required for works within the theatre.

The project represented the first use of QuikDeck® by the Brand Access Solutions team in the North West and demonstrated how the system could be integrated with conventional scaffolding to address complex access requirements.
