Trent River Bridge, Nottingham | QuikDeck® Suspended Access

QuikDeck® suspended access and CUPLOK® scaffolding for bridge refurbishment

The refurbishment of Trent River Bridge in Nottingham required a suspended access solution for work on the bridge façades and underside. Brand Access Solutions combined QuikDeck® Suspended Access with CUPLOK® system scaffolding to provide a 900 m² working platform. The suspended structure required only 45 attachment points, representing a 50% reduction compared with other access systems, according to the project documentation.

Scope

Brand Access Solutions, part of BrandSafway, provided an integrated scaffolding and suspended access solution for refurbishment works on Trent River Bridge in Nottingham.

The access arrangement combined the proprietary QuikDeck® Suspended Access System with CUPLOK® system scaffolding to enable work on the bridge façades and underside.

The project involved a 900 m² suspended working platform supported by suspension chains connected to the bridge structure at 45 attachment points.

Challenge

Refurbishment works on the façades and underside of a bridge require access to areas that are difficult to reach using conventional scaffolding arrangements.

For Trent River Bridge, the suspended access platform had to provide sufficient working space while limiting the number of attachment points required on the existing structure.

Another important consideration was access to the locations occupied by the suspension chains. These attachment areas can be difficult to reach during refurbishment works and may otherwise require additional finishing work after the main access system has been removed.

Performance

Brand Access Solutions combined QuikDeck® Suspended Access with CUPLOK® scaffolding to provide a 900 m² suspended working platform beneath the bridge.

The QuikDeck® system required only 45 suspension attachment points. According to the original project documentation, this represented a 50% reduction compared with alternative systems without reducing the scope of work.

The flexible suspension chains could be repositioned to provide access to areas around the attachment points. This allowed the working platform configuration to be adapted as access requirements changed.

The project demonstrates how modular suspended access and conventional system scaffolding can be combined to accommodate the specific requirements of bridge refurbishment, particularly where access to the underside of the structure and the number of suspension points are important considerations.
