Glasgow Harbour | Mastclimbers™

Complex mast climbing access solution for the re-cladding of two residential tower blocks

The re-cladding of two 35- and 55-metre residential tower blocks at Glasgow Harbour required a highly adaptable access solution. Complex building geometries, restricted access and the need to maintain access around the occupied development placed particular demands on the design and installation of the temporary access systems.

Scope

Brand Access Solutions, formerly Lyndon SGB, was appointed by main contractor Vinci Construction to provide access for the removal and replacement of cladding at Glasgow Harbour.

The £1 million, one-year contract involved multiple MASTCLIMBERS™ across two residential tower blocks measuring 35 and 55 metres in height. The mechanical access solution incorporated MC350, MC500, MC650 and MC1000 units and was designed in-house by the Brand Access Solutions team.

The wider access package also included load-bearing scaffolding from the lower car park to support the masts, protection walkways and additional access provided by cradles.

Challenge

The geometry of the two buildings made access particularly complex. In-shots around the façades and step-ins at higher levels along the balconies meant that standard mast climber configurations could not provide access to all areas required for the re-cladding works. Access at the rear of each block was also severely restricted.

Brand Access Solutions therefore had to develop special extensions for the MASTCLIMBERS™ to enable the contractor to reach the different areas of the façades.

The work was also carried out in a live residential environment. Access had to take account of residents occupying the buildings, members of the public using the adjacent River Clyde Walkway and vehicles entering and leaving the private underground parking areas.

Performance

Brand Access Solutions developed the complex mechanical access solution in-house, using different MASTCLIMBERS™ configurations and specially designed extensions to accommodate the varying façade profiles and restricted access conditions.

The combination of mast climbing work platforms and supporting scaffolding provided access to the different working areas required for the large-scale re-cladding programme. Despite the technical access challenges and delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Brand Access Solutions reported that the project was brought back on track for Vinci Construction.

Close collaboration between Brand Access Solutions and Vinci Construction throughout the design and erection phases supported the delivery of the access works and the safe progression of the re-cladding project.

Let's do something great on your next project.
