Integrated scaffolding, temporary roofing and construction hoists for university building refurbishment
The refurbishment and re-roofing of the Sidgwick Site Lecture Theatres at the University of Cambridge required an integrated access and weather protection solution within a tight construction schedule. Brand Access Solutions combined CUPLOK® system scaffolding, temporary roofing and two construction hoists, completing the access installation within six weeks despite underground services and restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Scope
Brand Access Solutions, formerly Lyndon SGB, was appointed to provide scaffolding, temporary roofing and construction hoists for the refurbishment of the Sidgwick Site Lecture Theatres at the University of Cambridge. Working closely with main contractor SDC Builders Ltd, the company designed and installed an external CUPLOK® access scaffold and temporary roof to facilitate the building refurbishment and re-roofing works. The hybrid access solution also included two construction hoists serving the roof levels. Up to 14 scaffolders worked on site alongside the specialist hoist team to complete the installation within a six-week period.

Challenge
The project presented several logistical and technical challenges. Existing underground services had to be taken into account during the planning and installation of the temporary access structures.
At the same time, the scaffolding, temporary roof and construction hoists had to be installed within a tight erection programme to enable the subsequent refurbishment and re-roofing works to proceed.
The works were also carried out within an active university environment during the COVID-19 pandemic, requiring additional consideration of site safety and working conditions.
Coordinating the scaffolding and hoist installations simultaneously was essential to meeting the programme requirements and achieving the planned handover before Christmas.
Performance
Brand Access Solutions developed an in-house engineered hybrid access solution integrating CUPLOK® system scaffolding, temporary roofing and two construction hoists. Close coordination between the scaffolding and hoist teams enabled the different access systems to be installed within the six-week programme. The completed structures provided external access, temporary weather protection and mechanical access to the roof levels for the refurbishment works.
Despite the challenges posed by underground services, COVID-19 restrictions and the compressed construction schedule, the access installation was successfully handed over to SDC Builders Ltd, allowing the re-roofing works to commence.
The main contractor confirmed that the team had completed a substantial amount of design, planning and installation work within a short period, marking an important milestone in the wider refurbishment programme.
