Runcorn Bridge | Scaffolding

The bridge which was originally built in 1961 is a vital traffic route carrying the A533 and a cantilevered footway across the River Mersey and the Manchester ship canal between the towns of Runcorn and Widnes.

Scope

Brand Access Solutions has to date carried out 6 operational contracts on the Silver Jubilee Bridge.

Challenge

It is an extremely challenging structure being a through arch bridge with a main span of 330 m with load restrictions adding complexity to the design. Brand Access Solutions has provided access to enable strengthening of the bridge with additions of new steel and concrete repairs. Brand Access Solutions has also provided containment for blasting and painting and with the Mersey estuary being a highly diverse ecological area; this was a very sensitive task from an environmental point of view.

The spandrel access phase of the works required over 1,000 alloy beams all of which were supplied out of the stock held by Brand Access Solutions. Partially supported from the spandrel legs, with a free span in excess of 16.0m between supports the platforms followed the arched contour of the spandrel legs. From the upper carriageway a series of a large drop scaffolds were hung from massive spine beams sat on welded cleats.
